3-Day Woodturning Workshop with Greg Gallegos @ Bull Valley Hardwood - Mill/Shop Location
Jan 17 @ 9:00 am – Jan 19 @ 5:00 pm
3-Day Woodturning Workshop with Greg Gallegos @ Bull Valley Hardwood - Mill/Shop Location
Greg’s Biography:
Greg Gallegos has been artistically inclined since he was very young. He was heavily into wood shop in high school and first fell in love with the lathe there. It took him another ten years after high school to be able to purchase a lathe.
After years of properly learning the craft and practicing the skills, Greg felt he was ready to start selling. He started with the local craft and art markets, which lead to several large national shows.
These days, Greg has settled into a fairly normal routine of being spontaneously creative at times and then prodigiously productive at other times. Trying to find a happy medium…not likely to happen but…Greg loves wood with a passion which keeps him wondering what the next piece of wood he cuts into will show him. He tries not to limit himself to a particular set of skills. He has turned just about everything there is to turn and loves them all. Hollow forms, natural edge bowls, functional tableware bowls in production runs, whimsical pieces, and decorative carving as well. Greg gravitates towards working with green wood to completion, as he really feels that it gives the wood its most simplistic forms and keeps the organic quality of the wood intact.
Class Description:
Although the class is setup as follows, adjustments to the curriculum can be made, based on the student feedback at the beginning of the workshop!
  • In this workshop Greg will go over the basics of turning green wood to completion from start to finish.
  • Projects we will cover are Podlets(wooden flowers), wooden pots and an intro into hollow vessel turning.
Topics covered for all three projects will be:
  • Wood selection
  • Grain alignment
  • Proper tool approach
  • Microwave drying
  • Texture-surface decoration
  • Finishing
You will learn how Greg approaches each of these projects from picking the wood, to how to use attractive figure in the wood to your benefit. You’ll also learn how to get the maximum amount of movement out of your green wood, for those projects that are enhanced by the wood movement. Greg will also talk about turning green wood and how you can take a different look at turning through this lens, to create unique and one of a kind pieces.
This class will be held Friday, Saturday & Sunday – January 17th, 18th & 19th, 2020!
Everything you will need for this class will be provided, although you are welcome to bring your own tools if you wish to.

Woodturning Class with Barry Todd – April 24 – 26, 2020 @ Bull Valley Hardwood - Mill/Shop Location
Apr 24 @ 9:00 am – Apr 26 @ 5:00 pm

Barry’s Biography:

My fascination with wood began at an early as I watched my dad in his shop.I think I’ve always loved the feel, texture smell and story that each piece holds within it. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed a range of doing flatwork ranging from birdhouses to fine cabinetry. It wasn’t until after retirement that I discovered my true passion in life, that being the wonderful world of woodturning. I began by tinkering with an old Craftsman bench top lathe that a friend had given me. I knew absolutely nothing about turning, but managed to make a few candlesticks, ball bats and some rough bowls while, surprisingly enough, not injuring myself. After about 4 years, someone saw some of my pieces and referred me to a wonderful turner by the name of Jim Burrowes, who became my mentor and good friend until he was diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. In the 4 years since I first set foot in his shop, I now turn full time and am enjoying my second career.

My work has appeared in the American Woodturner magazine among other publications. I have appeared on two episodes of the long running PBS series The American Woodshop, with Scott Phillips, and the Woodworking Adventures series by Woodcraft Stores. My work can be found in private collections in the U.S., Europe, Asia and the Middle East. I have demonstrated and instructed nationally for the past two years and was recently invited to demonstrate in Australia.

The more I learn about this wonderful art form, the more I realize that I have so much more to learn. My only regret is that I didn’t discover woodturning earlier in life!

Class Description:

This class is intended for skill levels ranging from those who wish to learn how to turn, but have never touched a turning gouge to intermediate level turners who may have been away from the lathe for a while and want to “dust off” their skills.

Day 1 – We will begin the day in the classroom getting to know a bit about each other and what each person wants to get from the class. We will also review safety requirements before moving on into the shop.

– Once in the shop we will explain the lathe, it’s parts and how it works as well as the basic tools that we will use on day #1 in learning spindle turning, choice of woods as well as any preparation of the wood necessary prior to mounting on the lathe.

– We will explain and demonstrate the roughing gouge first as we take a 4 sided piece of turning stock to a round piece. We will then demonstrate the use of the spindle gouge, and explain how it works in creating the basic forms found in turning, beads and coves.

– We will begin with an exercise in simple beads and coves, move on to combinations of both and finish the day with turning a finial, which is nothing more than a small “fancy” spindle. This is one piece of turning that frightens many new turners until they learn the basics of spindle turning.

Day 2 – The second day will be devoted to the use of the bowl gouge and turning 2-3 types of bowls.

– We will begin by discussing bowl blank preparation as well as discussing various ways of mounting bowl blanks for turning.

– We will demonstrate the proper presentation and application of the bowl gouge and how to first shape the outside of the bowl, form a “spigot” on the bottom and then reverse the bowl for removing wood from the inside.

Day 3 – The third day will be a day of options for those in the class. We will offer the opportunity to revisit spindles and bowls to those who are not yet comfortable in turning those forms. For those who feel comfortable and have shown proficiency in spindles and bowls, we will learn to turn a lidded box. These make great gifts and a nice way of showing friends and family that you are now a woodturner and willing to share the beauty of what you’ve learned!
